There are hundreds of questionable online puppy mill websites that puppies for sale. It is important to meet the mother dog, see her condition and how she and all of the breeders dogs are treated before you buy a puppy. In person. Never have a puppy shipped to you or meet a breeder in a parking lot. Don’t support puppy mills.
Most people have heard the words “puppy mill” and have an idea puppy mills are something bad but most do not truly understand what puppy mills are. A puppy mill might have as few as 15 dogs or they could be as large as over 500 dogs. A puppy mill is any dog breeding facility, large or small, where profit is given priority over the health and well-being of the dogs. Mills rarely provide any vet care, leaving parent dogs living with illness and painful chronic conditions for years.
Dog auctions are a side of puppy mills most people do not know even exist. But they are another example of the inhumane way dogs are treated… they are not companions, but just another number to be sold to the highest bidder to make yet more puppies. Lone Star Dog Ranch recently attended an auction and shared this emotional recounting of the day. (There is controversy in the anti puppy mill community about buying dogs at auctions, does it help or hurt the effort in the long run? We are not offering an opinion either way, but want to share this story to illustrate the horror that puppy mill dogs live.)
