Illinois Cuts Off Puppy Mill to Pet Store Pipeline
When signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker, HB1711 will amend the Illinois Animal Welfare Act to stop the sale of commercially-bred puppies and kittens in Illinois pet stores. Illinois will then be the 5th state in the country to tell pet stores and puppy mills their cruelty is no longer welcome.

This relationship might lead new puppy buyers into thinking their new very expensive puppy is not coming from a puppy mill. The nonprofit animal welfare organization American Humane is in something they call a “collaboration,” with the massive online puppy selling broker website Puppy Spot. Puppy Spot boasts a “No Puppy Mill Promise” on their website that could mislead new puppy buyers that the breeders they use are not puppy mills.
